Let’s face it (get it, get it? I know I’m so ‘punny’!), we all know the secret to glowing skin: lots of water, healthy eating, and a good dose of exercise. But that’s so much easier said than done – at least for me. It seems every time I tell myself I’m sleeping early, I somehow wound up still awake at 3am with Netflix still rolling, a bowl of ice cream in front of me…and pimples slowly manifesting on my face waiting to surprise me in the morning. It’s a habit I’m slowly trying to phase out – meanwhile, thank goodness I can fake healthy skin with a couple of acne masks!
Causes of Pimples
Aside from general unhealth from lack of sleep and horrible eating, there are more reasons that pimples develop. Hormones can overstimulation of the skin by something called androgens – which are responsible for flare-ups during that time of the month. Bacteria can also plug up the skin’s follicles, which can come from bad hygiene practices. Even if you’re cleansing your face twice a day, there might be some hidden bacteria causes in your beauty routine!

Folliculitis is a type of acne caused by the gathering of bacteria and yeast, which is common on makeup brushes that have collected leftover makeup. Cleaning your brushes once a week will help them stay gunk-free and face-friendly.
3 Face Masks to Fight Pimples
1. Cinnamon Honey
Ingredients: 1 tsp cinnamon powder, 2 tsp honey
How it works: The cinnamon in this recipe brings oxygen and blood to the skin’s surface, and helps dry out the problem area, while honey has antibacterial agents that destroy the bacteria that lead to breakouts.
Steps: Mix the cinnamon and honey together until even, and spread the mixture over your face and under your chin. Leave the mask on for 10-15 minutes, and then rinse off with warm water. Make sure you’re not using this mask more than 2 times a week though, as cinnamon can irritate the skin if you use it too often!
2. Brighten and Tighten with Lemon ‘Whites’
Ingredients: ½ tblsp fresh lemon juice, ½ tblsp raw honey, 1 egg white
How it works: Lemon juice lightens dark spots left by acne scars, aging, and hyperpigmentation. It also reduces skin oiliness, removes blackheads and gets rid of dead skin cells for brighter, smoother, glowing skin. Egg whites work to tighten and shrink the pores while maintaining skin elasticity. This all comes together with good old honey, that’s as antibacterial as always.
Steps: Place all the ingredients into a bowl, and whisk briskly (with a fork or whisk) until foamy. Apply onto a clean, dry face, and leave on for 30minutes or until it feels completely dried and tight on your skin. Rinse off with warm water.
3. Oily Honey Soda
Ingredients: 1 tsp extra-virgin olive oil, ½ tsp honey, 1 tsp baking soda
How it works: Olive and honey both have moisturizing properties, with olive oil in particular able to repair skin by promoting elasticity and reducing blemishes. The baking soda in here works as a gentle exfoliating agent, and boosts circulation while reducing the redness caused by breakouts.
Steps: Combine all the ingredients until you get a thin paste (if you want it thicker, add more baking soda). Massage onto clean, slightly damp skin, scrubbing in circular motions. Leave this on for 10 minutes and then rinse with warm water. Don’t use this more than once a month, as the baking soda can be too intense and irritate your skin if you use it to much.
